The Building Envelope includes many components but overall, the sum of its parts is one system. BES advocates that an overall ‘top-down’ approach to your system design and installation will reduce cost, minimize details and integration mistakes, and streamline the execution of the installation.
BES takes a process approach designed to define goals, prioritize objectives and develop and execute a plan to meet these objectives, mitigate costs and maximize transparency. This doesn’t mean altering an existing plan, this does suggest that there may be a cost savings by altering the approach.
The Facade Building Envelope, a core component an owner or developer is tasked with managing, has its own set set of complexities and a daunting amount of available information with which to work through. FBCM seeks to help filter the noise and information flow to so as to get at what's relevant to you, and to help streamline your process.
The goal is to provide a revenue neutral service by looking at the system holistically rather than by the sum of its parts. Information is then key to unlocking a fresh perspective from which to make more informed decisions. In short; objective information + new perspective = saving you money.
Your existing design and engineered stamped plan represents your strategy in the same way a football play looks on paper, any student of the game knows it’s the execution of the plan that matters. You wouldn’t put any more steps into a football play than needed; and you’d be clear about each step that is included. How often do we see this approach in the construction process?
So if you assess what’s needed and why, might that lead to cost savings? The envelope structural components, insulation compliance, maintenance and design aesthetics, each piece has its own value proposition which supports the importance of relevant information and cost transparency. With Needs assessed, relevant information provided and transparency throughout, conditions are then set for a conducive and productive partnership.
This site is the start of a work in progress - the intent is to be a resource for objective information and perspective. Topics to explore; below is a thought about converting strategy into planning, industry & product information and white papers on other pages relating to exterior envelope research and code info.

“When something is headed your way...
What’s your strategy?”
In any endeavor we define "strategy" as "the overall objective" and "tactics" as "the means employed to achieve those objectives".
You know your strategy, how well positioned and aligned are your tactics?
Strategy
Mitigate moisture infiltration
Maximize energy savings
Design aesthetics
Geographical consistency
Maximize future value
Minimize maintenance
Tactic
Component details and integration
Balancing needs assessment and compliance
Available facade options & systems
Relative cost effectiveness
Relative present and future value
Relative maintenance requirements
